STORY
Rather than representing Sudan in a traditional sense, Lina's work explores what it means to grow up between cultures. Through playful drawings of everyday objects that carry cultural significance, she uses textiles to creatively document her own journey deepening her understanding of Sudanese culture.
Through print, colour and material, her printed textiles aim to tell stories that resonate with people who have similarly complex relationships with culture and identity, while also inviting people outside of those experiences to engage with them.
THE ROYAL COLLEGE OF ART
Lina's Masters degree at The Royal College of Art provided her with time to explore hand processes such as screen-printing and drawing. Through playful and bold drawings she designed collections of prints that combine bold motifs of nostalgic cultural products with colours and textures inspired by environments she has lived in, within the UK.
CENTRAL SAINT MARTINS
Lina's final year at Central Saint Martins marked the beginning of her journey exploring her heritage through textiles. Focussing on visualising the second-generation immigrant experience, she merges elements that are recognisably traditional with visible western influences. Key processes explored at Central Saint Martins include digital sublimation printing, appliqué and embroidery.
